CUMMINS KAMA Launches Manufacturing of L-Series Engines

21 March 2017

A new Cummins L-Series engine assembly line has been launched at CUMMINS KAMA Russian-American Joint Venture set up by KAMAZ (part of Rostec State Corporation) and Cummins Inc. in Naberezhnye Chelny.

Cummins Group Vice President Steven Chapman, the top managers of the company's Russian office and KAMAZ were present at the ceremonial launch of the new assembly line. The journalists of Russia's leading specialized periodicals invited to the event were given a chance to test-drive KAMAZ vehicles powered with Cummins engines. The guests also saw the JV's exhibited products and production lines. The agenda of the event includes a press conference with Irek Gumerov, Director for Development of KAMAZ PTC, Oleg Afanasiev, Head of KAMAZ's Press Service, the top managers of Cummins Inc.

Combining advantages of a light and small motor with constructional strength of a heavy engine, the ISLe Series boasts of topnotch specifications and, at the same time, meets stringent environmental requirements. Weighing a bit more than 700 kg, the engine is ideal for trucks and medium-duty truck tractors used in Russia, and it ensures the maximum torque in its class. This type is used for heavy trucks and KAMAZ-6520 chassis, special vehicles produced by RIAT Plc, and the version already localized is expected to be installed in agricultural and off-road vehicles by other Russian producers: Rostselmash harvesters, Chetra earthmovers, and others. Industrial modifications of the L-Series engine will be mechanical and electronic versions of the engine for various certification levels.

What is noteworthy is that CUMMINS KAMA's production program usually includes two families of engines. The lion's share - almost 80% - accounts for Cummins ISBe 6.7 straight six engines generating up to 300 hp. These units work well for medium- and heavy-duty KAMAZ trucks, as well as NEFAZ buses. The rest products are diesel four-cylinder Cummins ISBe 4.5 engines with power ranging from 140 to 185 hp. At the same time, both families of engines meet Euro 4 and Euro 5 standards. Besides, the JV is effectively mastering the production of advanced industrial modifications of its products in order to satisfy the needs of Russia's top manufacturers of road-building machinery, industrial and agricultural vehicles. The QSB 6.7 Tier 3 engines are built on a uniform platform with a widely used ISBe 6.7 engine. In March 2017, CUMMINS KAMA JV has expanded its product lineup after launching the assembly of L-Series engines with capacity of 8.9 litres and power under 400 hp.
